The Balcony

1990

In 1990 I was invited to participate in the “Construction in Process III” exhibition in Lodz, Poland, where I created the White Passageways. In various locations in the city, I restored house passages by replastering their walls and painting them over in brilliant white. At that time, white paint was hard to come by in Poland, and so I would hand out small quantities of the paint I had brought with me to people who asked me for some in the street. A little later you could see the results: the original concept had envisaged restoring specific passage- ways within the framework of an art project, but it had now been extended to include the autonomous restoration of people’s private living spaces. One example was “The Balcony”.
