Out Of Order

The art of the 1990s is associated with conceptual acuity and formal-aesthetic reduction, but also with free use of formats and an expansion of curatorial activity. It was during this period that Axel and Barbara Haubrok began building their impressive collection with its focus on international trends in conceptual art. They are especially interested in museum-scale sculptures and objects, but also rigorous material from the field of film and photography, as well as abstract painting. The works in their collection (now numbering more than a thousand) are minimalist, often black-and-white or monochrome, but also charming and cheerful. Most characteristic are those where a rich vein of humour is to be found behind the rigorous formal sobriety. The collection includes important bodies of work by Carol Bove, Martin Boyce, Martin Creed, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Isa Genzken, Wade Guyton, Georg Herold, Jonathan Monk, Charlotte Posenenske, Florian Pumhösl, Willem de Rooij, Karin Sander, Wolfgang Tillmans, Christopher Williams, Franz West, Haegue Yang and Heimo Zobernig.
Neues Museum has invited the Haubroks to develop a highly personal presentation for the main exhibition hall. The title Out of Order reflects the humour and non-conformity of these collectors who have a keen eye for “untidy”, ambiguous and enigmatic work. In two parts following on from one another, the exhibition showcases the main focuses of the collection: sculpture, painting, drawings and photography. As Axel Haubrok explains, “Part 1 features only free-standing readymades and sculptures, Part 2 only hanging pictures, both underlining the conceptual approach of the collection and creating many new links between the works, especially since several artists are represented in both parts of the exhibition”.
Neues Museum Nürnberg is delighted to present one of the country’s most important collections of contemporary art for the first time in southern Germany.
